Christkindl Market Returns to Lawrenceville Nov. 20. Thanksgiving Night Still Belongs to the Courthouse Tree.

October 29, 2026

On Thursday, Nov. 26, at 6 p.m., Santa is scheduled to light the Great Tree at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse, 185 West Crogan Street. The evening runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and is free. There's a trackless train, s'mores, a Gingerbread House Contest display, and Aurora Theatre's Festival of Trees inside the Lawrenceville Arts Center. That night the Atlanta Christkindl Market on the Lawrenceville Lawn is closed. Thanksgiving week is one of the two weeks the market adds Monday through Wednesday hours, so Thursday, Nov. 26, is the only day it closes that week.

That closure says a lot about how downtown Lawrenceville's holidays work now. The market's second season here starts earlier and stays open later than its first. For the first time, a hotel sits a block from the square to house the out-of-town crowd. The county seat's older traditions now fall on the dates and hours the market leaves open.

Last Year's Crowd Came From Somewhere Else

The City of Lawrenceville's January 2026 report on the 2025 season counted 370,800 visits to the market. Of those, 159,500 also went into the downtown area, which the city put at 77 percent more than in 2024. More than 81 percent of visitors came from outside the city, 58 percent from outside Gwinnett County, and nearly 11 percent from outside Georgia or the United States. The 2025 season was also 11 days shorter than the market's 2024 run in Buckhead.

The market brings the crowds, and the city plans parking, walking routes and the local calendar around them. In the same report, the city listed its own work: shuttle planning, the Winterlight Walk, security staffing, sanitation, and electrical support. The market itself is run by its organizers as a fundraiser for the German American Cultural Foundation.

Downtown businesses benefited from that crowd. In the city's report, 16 downtown businesses took part directly in the market, and participating businesses reported sales up about 5 to 30 percent over the prior year during the market period. In the same report, Scott McCray, owner of McCray's Tavern and Perry Street Chophouse, said his teams were excited to decorate the stores and wear festive uniforms. Bryan Mason of Boulder Creek called the market "an amazing blessing to all my businesses." Lindsay Mason of Becca's Well Teahouse and Market and Ene Mandella of Nancy's Candy & Spice described the market as a way to meet large numbers of people and introduce them to their businesses, with Lindsay Mason mentioning "locals and visitors, young and old."

The Second Season Starts Earlier and Stays Open Later

After those numbers, the organizers signed a longer commitment. The market's sponsor page announces a five-year agreement with the City of Lawrenceville and, a few lines down, lists it as "up to" five years. The Gwinnett Daily Post quoted City Manager Chuck Warbington: "We're excited that the Atlanta Christkindl Market will return to Lawrenceville for the 2026 holiday season."

The 2026 schedule adds time at both ends of the day and of the season. Here's how it compares with the 2025 hours that The DiG published last fall.

2025 season 2026 season
Opening day Nov. 28 Friday, Nov. 20
Wednesday and Thursday 3 to 8 p.m. 3 to 9 p.m.
Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Thanksgiving week, Mon. to Wed. Not listed 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Christmas week, Mon. to Wed. Open daily 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Christmas Eve Final day 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is still free. The market is regularly open Wednesday through Sunday, so Mondays and Tuesdays are closed except during Thanksgiving week and Christmas week. The market's events calendar for Lawrenceville had no listings in late October, so named performances and Santa photo dates haven't been posted yet.

The organizers are also opening a second market in Senoia this year, at 158 Seavy Street, from Nov. 27 to Dec. 24, 2026. With 58 percent of last year's visitors coming from outside Gwinnett, a market on the far side of the metro gives some of them a closer option. How much that changes the Lawrenceville crowd won't be clear until the season starts.

A Hotel on Crogan Street for the First Time

Last December's market ran without a hotel downtown. This year, The Lawrence opened at 120 E. Crogan St., a block from the Lawrenceville Arts Center, as Metro Atlanta CEO reported on Sept. 1. It's a new-build, 120-room hotel in Hilton's Tapestry Collection, developed and managed by NorthPointe Hospitality Management & Development. It stands where the Lawrenceville cotton mill, and later the Genesco shoe factory, once stood. In the city's January report, Lawrenceville linked the market's results to building momentum ahead of the hotel opening.

For people who live nearby, the hotel adds two places to eat and drink downtown. Bellfire serves Mediterranean and Southern food from wood-fired grills and takes reservations through OpenTable. Old Nick's is the hotel's open-air spot for cocktails and casual food. This is the first market season for both.

Where the Local Calendar Fits

The market's dates now cover almost the same stretch as downtown's big holiday stage show. Aurora Theatre's Christmas Canteen 2026 plays the Metro Waterproofing Main Stage at the Lawrenceville Arts Center from Nov. 19 to Dec. 23. It opens the night before the market and closes the day before the market's last day.

The rest of the local calendar mostly falls in the morning or on the night the market is closed. The Downtown Lawrenceville calendar for December 2026 lists:

  • Thursday, Nov. 26: Lighting of the Tree at the Historic Courthouse, 5:30 to 8 p.m., the one evening of Thanksgiving week the market is closed
  • Saturday, Dec. 5: The Holiday Science Show at Aurora Theatre, 136 E. Pike St., 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
  • Dec. 5 and 6: Gwinnett Symphony's Holiday Pops with Joe Gransden at the Lawrenceville Arts Center
  • Saturday, Dec. 12: The Holiday Magic Extravaganza at Aurora Theatre, shows at 10 and 11:30 a.m.
  • Saturday, Dec. 19: The Holiday Juggling Show at Aurora Theatre

The two Saturday morning shows on Dec. 5 and Dec. 12 end before or soon after the market opens at 11 a.m. The tree lighting gets Thanksgiving night to itself. On regular Wednesdays and Thursdays, the market doesn't open until 3 p.m., so the Lawn and the streets around it stay quiet until midafternoon.

Getting In When the Lots Fill

The market's page directs drivers to Lots A, B, E, F, G, H and I. Lots C and D are not available. Downtown parking is free. The options are two-hour street parking around the Historic Square, the Downtown Lawrenceville Parking Deck at 147 East Crogan Street behind the Arts Center, the Luckie Street Parking Deck at 225 Luckie Street near the Lawn, and public lots at Crogan, Culver and Pike Streets with access from Culver Street.

Last year the city added parking at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center and the Fallen Heroes Memorial. It ran a shuttle on select days and lit the Winterlight Walk, designed by Illuminating Design Inc., along the route into downtown. Gwinnett County provided free parking at county facilities. The DiG described that walk from the Justice and Administration Center to the Lawn as less than half a mile, past holiday light displays. Those were 2025 arrangements, as was the 50-foot Ferris wheel. As of late October, the city hasn't announced a 2026 Winterlight Walk, shuttle schedule or holiday parking plan, so check the city's news page before planning a visit around any of them.

The 2025 plan included an update to the city's EZ-2-PARK program, with color-coded lots and decks and new wayfinding signs. The city launched that updated downtown parking plan ahead of the 2025 holiday season.

A permanent hotel, a market under a multiyear agreement, and longer hours all treat Lawrenceville's December as something that will happen again each year. Here's what's fixed on the 2026 calendar: Canteen opens Nov. 19, the market opens Nov. 20, the courthouse tree is lit at 6 p.m. on Nov. 26, and the market's final hours end at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

At The Sly Team, we follow how projects like The Lawrence and a long-term market agreement change a county seat's downtown, because that's the work we do with builders and buyers across metro Atlanta. If you're watching downtown Lawrenceville and want to talk through what its next few years could mean for you, get started with The Sly Team.
